CHAPTER TWO
Paul
shares the need to see the believers physically. He affirms that their meeting
will lead to the comfort of the Colossian believers. They will be knit together in love
(bonding) and there will be a full assurance of understanding.
All
doubts will be removed and they will acknowledge that they truly understand the
mysteries of God the Father and of Christ which have been taught them through
the letters and the ministry of Epaphras (Col 1:7)
From
vs 3, he begins to explain to them that all treasures of wisdom and knowledge
and Christ. They are only to be discovered.
Precious
things are not found on the surface you have to dig to find them. Don't allow
anyone to sway you with seductive words with the intention of making you lose
your faith and allegiance to Christ.
As
we have received Christ we need to walk in him. We must seek to be:
Rooted in him
Built up in him
Established in the faith and
Abounding in all these with Thanksgiving
Colossians 2:6-7 KJV
As
ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and
built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding
therein with thanksgiving.
Things we must watch against
·
Philosophy and vain deceit
·
Wisdom and thought that is contrary to the
word of God and the revelation of the Holy Spirit.
·
Traditions of men
·
Customs of men (including religious leaders
that negate the word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit
·
Rudiments (Principles of the world... worldly
systems)
·
Cultures that are against the biblical
worldview
·
False humility and Angelic worship (and hero-worship)
·
Legalism...living according to the Mosaic
ceremonial laws
·
Commandments and doctrines of men
We
must be able to separate God's laws from man's laws.
Christ is sufficient
The
reason we are to abstain from all these is that they have the capacity to
bring us back into bondage even after we have been liberated through Christ's
sacrifice on the cross.
The
writings of ordinances in the law were things we could not live up to in our
own strength but in the New Testament, the law is written in our hearts and righteousness
is imparted unto us. We are also justified. The curse of the law that was
against us has been destroyed. Hallelujah 🙌
Colossians
2:16, 18, 20, 22-23 KJV
Let
no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday,
or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days : Let no man beguile you of your
reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those
things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind Wherefore
if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though
living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, Which all are to perish with
the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have
indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the
body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
