Revival in the Bone Yard: The Power of the Word

Introduction

The vision of revival in the valley of dry bones is deeply instructive for both our personal and collective pursuit of revival. It reminds us of two critical needs:  

- The hand of God upon our lives.  

- Intimacy with the Holy Spirit.  

We also see a vivid picture of our generation—the challenges we must confront and dismantle through the power of the gospel. God is preparing us individually and collectively for a specific task in His kingdom. I believe that God is powering you up to do something significant in this season.

The Call to Prophesy

Ezekiel 37:4 says:  

"Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord."  

Two emphases stand out:  

- Prophesy upon these bones   

- Hear the word of the Lord 

This verse highlights three key points:  

1. The role of a prophet or revivalist.  

2. The capacity of the word of God.  

3. The engagement of the word of God.  

The Role of the Prophet/Revivalist

The critical role of a prophet in any generation is to bear the word of the Lord to the people. Prophets are God’s mouthpieces. To fulfill this role, a prophet must:  

- Be born of the incorruptible word (1 Peter 1:23).  

- Be sanctified by the truth (John 17:17).  

- Be filled with the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of prophecy.  

- Be called into the ministry of a prophet.  

- Live out the word of God, embodying it in daily life.  

To prophesy effectively, one must be soaked in the word of God. The Holy Spirit draws from the scriptures stored in our hearts to meet needs and speak life. This requires being an ardent reader and meditator of the Bible.

The Capacity of the Word of God

The word of God is powerful, alive, and transformative. Consider these scriptures:  

- Isaiah 8:20: The word is the standard of truth.  

- Ephesians 6:17: The word is the sword of the Spirit.  

- 2 Samuel 23:2: The Spirit speaks through the prophet’s tongue.  

- John 6:63: The words of Jesus are spirit and life.  

The word has capacity to:  

- Bring life and transformation (Romans 1:16).  

- Grow and prevail (Acts 19:20).  

- Spread and awaken communities through the Spirit’s power.  

Expressions of the Word

The word of God can be expressed in diverse ways:  

- Writing Prophets – moved by the Spirit to record God’s word.  

- Drama Prophets – demonstrating God’s message through symbolic acts (e.g., Hosea marrying a harlot, Agabus binding himself with Paul’s girdle).  

- Singing Prophets – like David, who expressed prophecy through psalms.  

- Foretelling Prophets – declaring God’s mind about the future in alignment with His word.  

Whether forthtelling (declaring transformation) or foretelling (revealing the future), prophecy must always conform to the word of God and must have a witness of the Spirit in our hearts.

Engaging the Word of God

God asked Ezekiel to speak directly to the bones. Likewise, we are called to:  

- Declare the word over situations – speak life into dead circumstances.  

- Preach and teach the word – guided by the Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).  

- Prophesy for edification, exhortation, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3).  

- Expect conviction and transformation when the word is spoken (1 Corinthians 14:24-25).  

When we speak the word of God, we should expect revival, healing, and breakthrough. Dry bones will come to life, weaknesses will disappear, and communities will be transformed.

Conclusion

The revival in the bone yard teaches us that the word of God is the key to transformation. Prophets and revivalists must be equipped, sanctified, and filled with the Spirit to declare God’s word with power.

As you do, expect conviction, conversion, transformation, and revival. Truly, the word of God has the capacity to grow, prevail, and spread until our generation is transformed for Christ.
