Helps for an effective schools outreach ministry

Do you feel that the Lord is leading you to reach out to schools? Are you sensing that God wants you to engage in students’ ministry? Then you need to read this. This list is not exhaustive but it will be very helpful.

1.      Understand that God has an agenda for schools. Ps 144:12; Lam 4:1ff.

2.      Be sure of your calling and passion for school outreach.

3.      It is a work that requires commitment. Pray for grace and determination.

4.      Write down the vision God is giving you for your school and run with it.

5.      Intercession is a great key to effective school evangelism.

6.      You must be a 24/7 Christian. You must be constantly on fire for God. Be filled with the Holy Spirit.

7.      Make the presentation of the word of God applicable and use different approaches to communicate the teaching.

8.      Be presentable in outlook and approachable. Develop relationships with teachers and students. Smile and be friendly.

9.      Get necessary approval from schools before you start your outreach. Where there is existing work, collaborate and don’t compete.

10. Punctuality is the soul of business and consistency is the heart of this outreach.

11. Engage in spiritual warfare for the school.

12.  Take interest in the lives of teachers and students.

13. Learn the art of public communication.

14. Be sensitive to happenings in and around your fellowship/outreach centre

15. When you’re teaching or preaching, let them have points they can always remember.

16. Everyone loves a story as they say. Engage stories.

17. Be very courteous and respectful to everyone you meet at your school outreach point. Send thank-you notes and text messages.

18. Emphasise that young people make a decision after your ministration.

19. Engage follow-up, discipleship and leadership development for effective successions and expansion of Kingdom work.

20. Organise effective programmes to achieve all your ministerial goals.

21. Use literature to supplement and corroborate all your preaching efforts.

22. Prayerfully engage the right outreach approach – Morning Assemblies, Literature Outreach, School Fellowship, Teachers’ Fellowship, Drama/Film shows etc.

23. Use social media to reach out to your students. Evangelism and follow-up can be possible to an extent through this platform.

24. You need to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in reaching students. Seek to operate in the gifts and power of the Spirit.

25. Love is the rule and the watchword. Love them and you will win them.

26. Use them or you will lose them. Engage the students in ministry as they grow spiritually.

27. There will be discouraging moments and days. Encourage yourself in the Lord.

28. Have a network/team you can work with so that someone can represent you when you’re absent.

29. Be very passionate about the academic development of the students.

30. Don’t forget to retreat. Seek the Lord and make your relationship with Him the priority.

Trust you’re blessed and fired up. God bless you!
