Do you want to position yourself for impact, influence and income through writing? This article is for you.
Several folks want to achieve a lot through writing but their content is not marketable. Building your writing ability is essential to achieving something significant with it.
In this article, I am going to share with you thirteen guides that will help you move from being a beginner to a wordsmith.
IT'S IN YOU!
Everyone is a writer of some sort. The fact is, we all write every day. The secret is if you can write a word, you can write a phrase or simple sentence. And if you can construct a simple sentence, you can write a paragraph. A body of writing is simply the composition of paragraphs (pregnant with meaning) that synchronize.
If you write impromptu speeches, text messages, minutes of meetings, letters and memos, you can develop your capacity to write larger volumes of content
TIE YOUR WRITING TO A PURPOSE
You can only grow in writing if you have a strong "WHY". So, you need to ask yourself: "Why do I want to write/be a writer?"
Purpose will fuel your passion. You can achieve consistency in writing if you have an inner drive.
BUILDING BLOCKS
Writing begins from a concept (thought or idea). You then put it down as a word or sentence. You then begin to link sentences together to make a point. Those sentences become the body of your writing (paragraphs). Let there be interconnectedness in the thoughts you are putting down in your writing.
WRITE DAILY
How do you form a habit? Through repetition. Writing is a skill that grows by sharpening. If you allow a tool to lie dormant, it will become dull. It becomes sharp as it is put into use. Start writing a few words, paragraphs and grow from there. It will take some work but it will yield sweet fruits.
YOUR NICHE AND YOUR VOICE
Selecting a niche in writing refers to focusing your writing efforts on a particular topic, subject or genre. Narrowing down to a niche will help you create content that is targeted to a specific audience. It will also help you establish yourself as an authority in that field. Thus, you're able to have a consistent brand voice.
READ WIDE AND MAKE RESEARCH
As a writer, you must learn to read frequently and widely. Reading wide will expose you to adequate knowledge such that you don’t find it difficult to either express yourself or provide appropriate and value-packed content. It sort of builds your confidence level.
Make your research very well before writing on any subject so that you do not write off-point.
ENSURING CORRECTNESS OF GRAMMAR (Basic principles of writing)
a. Use the right prepositions
b. Capital letters: It is wrong to use a capital letter in the middle of a sentence except it is a proper noun. Capital letters are used at the beginning of every sentence.
c. Avoid slang or short forms
d. Incorrect use of relative pronouns should be avoided (who, whom, which, that).
e. Concord: There must be an agreement between the subject and verb.
f. Use punctuation marks correctly.
g. Spell words correctly. Use some apps that can help. Grammarly app is a good one. Also, checking words online for their correctness before making your writing public is a good idea.
h. Right use of tenses
REMOVE COMPLEX WORDS
My mentor emphasized to me that my writing has to be CLEAR. To achieve clarity, remove words that require extra effort for your readers to understand. Endeavour to keep it simple. Keeping it simple will go a long way to help you avoid writer's block.
ANTICIPATE QUESTIONS
Before you start writing, think of the possible questions your readers might want to ask. Then, ensure to give answers to those questions in the writing. This is how to make your content highly valuable.
TRAINING
Get trained in the aspect of writing or the niche you want to focus on. Writing sprees and challenges will go a long way to sharpen your writing skills.
USE A STORY
Storytelling is very important in building a business brand, especially in 2025. People love stories and you can get more people to engage with your content if you regularly use it.
FOLLOW A MENTOR
You will certainly find someone passionate about what you are hoping to do. Study their writings and gain inspiration from them. Study their content and learn from it. Stand on the shoulders of your mentor but bring in your creativity.
LEVERAGE AI/CHATGPT
ChatGPT has the capacity to produce readymade text content on almost anything you request. You can leverage it by expanding the horizon of your knowledge on subject matters and you can also learn a lot on structuring your writing. However, you mustn't allow it to erode your original voice.
