The Digital Pulpit: Harnessing Social Media for Gospel Outreach

“He who controls the media controls the culture. The people who control the media determine how the generation thinks” - Subomi Plumptre

The need to influence the media space with gospel content is very crucial and it is even more urgent now. We need to deliberately engage the weapon in our hands (gospel power through the pen) to transform the culture.

The information, inspiration and impartation that flows through your pen has the capacity to shape people's beliefs, thoughts, words and consequently, lives.

Research shows that social media as a powerful communication tool can trigger an invasion of culture... (Tang and Chan, 2020).

How social media can aid gospel advancement

1. Wider reach and accessibility

Social media provides an opportunity to reach a vast audience. With billions of users worldwide, SM platforms offer a global reach as compared to the traditional methods of gospel preaching.

It also provides the opportunity to have access to people from different cultures, backgrounds, and geographical locations, breaking down barriers and providing an avenue for evangelism on a global scale.

2. Shaping the NextGen

Social media is primarily dominated by the younger generation (NextGen). By utilizing the existing SM platforms, it becomes possible to effectively engage with young people (who spend a large chunk of their time online) with content that is able to transform them and help to give them the right footing in life.

3. Opportunities for discipleship through engagement and communication

Social media platforms make it possible to interact by making comments on posts and during live streaming. Direct messaging is another efficient way of interacting with people on social media.

These features make engagement and communication possible. They make it possible to have meaningful discussions and provide robust guidance to people interested in knowing more about God.

This creates opportunities for discipleship, allowing mature believers to connect with younger believers, to guide them in their spiritual journeys.

4. Apologia

Social media provides a platform for defending and explaining the Christian faith, known as apologia. Online spaces often witness debates, discussions, and challenges to religious beliefs.

By utilizing social media, believers can effectively present reasoned and well-thought-out responses to objections and doubts, engaging in apologetic conversations with those who have questions or misconceptions about the gospel.

5. Inspiration and encouragement

Social media can serve as a powerful source of inspiration and encouragement for believers. Through uplifting posts, testimonies, and shared experiences, individuals can find strength and motivation in their faith journeys.

Social media communities also foster connections among like-minded individuals, allowing them to support and encourage one another, building a sense of unity and solidarity in their shared beliefs.

To conclude, written content on social media is very relevant because written content is highly searchable and discoverable. Also, it is easily accessible, timeless and it has the capacity to convey depth and connection with those who read them.

Let this piece inspire you and reignite your passion for using social media to share God’s word. It is the comprehensive equipment for changing lives.
