The Restoration of the Kingdom

Devotional Text:

So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

But He said to them, “It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which the Father has set by His own authority;

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth” (Acts 1:6–8, NASB).

The disciples gathered around Jesus with a very sincere question. After following Him faithfully, witnessing His resurrection, and hearing Him teach for forty days about the kingdom of God, they had one major expectation: the restoration of the kingdom to Israel. They longed for freedom from Roman oppression. They longed for national dignity to be restored. They longed to see prophecy fulfilled. And so they asked, “Lord, is it at this time…?”

But Jesus’ response exposed something deep: their focus was on timing, but His focus was on their assignment.

They were asking when the kingdom would be restored, but Jesus was pointing them toward how the kingdom would advance, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the witness of believers to the ends of the earth.

Their question was not wrong. It was simply too small for the greatness of God’s agenda.

1. A Shift From the Natural to the Spiritual

Jesus had been teaching them about the kingdom, its realities, its demands, and its manifestations. Yet their minds were still locked on the political expression of that kingdom. They were thinking of Israel’s liberation from Rome, but Jesus wanted them to see God’s plan for the nations. They wanted a kingdom restored to Israel; Jesus wanted a kingdom expanding through Israel to the ends of the earth.

This is often how we are.

We sit before God with desires and expectations shaped by our immediate needs. We ask Him for the when, “When will I be lifted? When will the breakthrough happen? When will the promise manifest?” But God is often asking us to rise higher and see His bigger picture.

The restoration of the kingdom would certainly come, but not in the way, timing, or political structure they expected. God’s way was to start with the gospel spreading across the world, gathering a people into Himself, and preparing the earth for the return of Jesus. The disciples needed a shift, from earthly timelines to heavenly purposes, from political expectations to spiritual assignments.

2. The Kingdom Does Not Advance by wanting to know Dates

Jesus’ answer is timeless:

“It is not for you to know the times and seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.”

There are things God has kept under His exclusive authority. The exact dates of prophetic events, the timing of certain manifestations, the unfolding of end-time happenings, all these are sealed in the Father’s wisdom.

This teaches us something vital: God does not want His children occupied with speculation. The obsession with dates, timelines, predictions, and sensational end-time charts is a distraction from the real work of the kingdom.

The rapture will happen. The end-time events will unfold. The kingdom will be restored in fullness. But until then, God’s people are called into something greater than guessing God’s calendar; we are called to partner with His agenda.

3. The True Focus: Power for Witnessing

Jesus redirected them well:

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”

Instead of dates, He offered them power. Instead of timelines, He gave them an assignment. Instead of worrying about when God would work, He called them to let God work through them.

This is the heart of kingdom advancement.

The Holy Spirit is the force behind the restoration of the kingdom. He empowers believers to witness, to preach, to disciple, to influence, to transform communities, and to reveal Jesus. God’s strategy for taking His kingdom to the ends of the earth is not political reform — it is Spirit-filled believers living out the life of Christ.

Every revival, every church plant, every missionary movement, every transformation of a family or community is part of this restoration God is orchestrating.

4. Thinking Less About When and More About What and Who

The disciples asked when. Jesus answered with what — “You will receive power” — and who — “You shall be my witnesses.”

This lesson remains crucial.

Instead of being consumed with when God will change your season, He wants you focused on what He has called you to do and who He is sending you to. Purpose becomes clearer when we stop fixating on timing and start fixing our gaze on kingdom assignment.

Your needs, challenges, and desires should not reduce your spiritual passion; they should awaken your sense of purpose. Sometimes God allows the pressure around us so that we can step boldly into the divine paths ordained for us.

When your heart is aligned with purpose, the timings of God automatically begin to align in your favour.
