The Name of Jesus

Introduction

Names carry deep meaning. They reveal identity, worth, and essence. Parents carefully choose names for their children because names shape destiny. 

Matthew 1:21 says:  

"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

Throughout Scripture, God gave names to people like Samson and John the Baptist, and sometimes He changed names—Abram became Abraham—to align with His divine purpose. The name of Jesus is the ultimate revelation of identity, mission, and power.

The Meaning of the Name

The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew Yeshua, meaning Saviour. His name embodies:

- Identity – who He is.  

- Worth – the value He carries.  

- Mission – what He came to accomplish.  

His name is a repository of His person and power. What He can do, His name can do! Just as a signature on a cheque carries authority without physical presence, the name of Jesus carries His essence wherever it is invoked.

The Mission of Jesus

The mission of Jesus is salvation.  

- Matthew 18:11: “For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.”  

- John 1:12: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”  

- Romans 10:13: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  

His name saves us from the guilt and power of sin. Believing in His name guarantees salvation.

Engaging the Name of Jesus

The name of Jesus is not just to be admired—it is to be engaged in every aspect of life:

1. In Good Works  

   - Mark 9:41: Even a cup of water given in His name has eternal reward.  

   - Acts 15:26: Men risked their lives for the name of Jesus.  

2. In Prayer  

   - John 14:14: “If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”  

   - His name gives assurance that prayers aligned with His will are answered.  

3. In Protection  

   - Proverbs 18:10: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”  

4. In Our Walk  

   - Micah 4:5: We walk in the name of the Lord forever.  

5. In Trust  

   - Psalm 20:7: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”  

6. In Warfare  

   - Philippians 2:9-11: At the name of Jesus, every knee bows and every tongue confesses His Lordship.  

7. In Worship  

   - His name is exalted above every name. Bowing before Him reveals His glory and fills us with His fullness.  

Experiencing the Power of His Name

The name of Jesus is not symbolic—it is powerful.  

- Acts 3:6: “Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.”  

Chains are broken, lives are restored, and miracles happen at the mention of His name. Truly, there is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain.
