Elisha had just received Elijah’s mantle and witnessed the parting of the waters. Immediately after, he was confronted with a city that looked pleasant outwardly but was barren within. His response was simple yet profound: “Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein.”
2 Kings 2:19–22 (KJV)
“And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.
And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.
And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.”
God’s Strategy for Healing
God’s divine strategy for healing nations and communities is to cast salt into critical places—spheres of influence—so that lives can be transformed. The Bible says creation eagerly awaits the manifestation of the sons of God.
Many lands today are fruitless and barren. God wants to cast His people, the salt of the earth, into these places so that bad waters (broken lives) may be healed and productivity restored. The change God desires is not in machines or methods, but in men. When the right men flow into the right places, nations experience transformation.
The Call for a New Cruse
Elisha did not ask for just any vessel; he asked for a new cruse. This is symbolic. God is not looking for old, worn-out vessels clinging to past achievements or outdated mindsets. He is seeking new vessels—men and women renewed by Christ, ready to carry His salt into the world.
- Are you carrying a new cruse or an old one?
- Have you encountered the Man of Calvary who makes all things new?
- Are you dwelling on past exploits, or are you ready to plug into God’s agenda for the now?
The old generation in Joshua’s day could not enter the Promised Land, but the new generation did. Likewise, God is raising new vessels for His present move.
Positioning Yourself as a New Cruse
To become a new cruse in God’s hands, five steps are essential:
1. Ask God for personal revival.
Pray for fresh fire and the Spirit of prayer to rest upon you so you can pray without ceasing.
2. Align with God’s agenda for your life.
Seek clarity about your Promised Land and ask God to bring you into alignment with His purpose.
3. Align with God’s agenda for the Church.
Position yourself to influence lives for Jesus by walking in step with His plan for His body.
4. Ask God to purge you of old ideas and attitudes.
Lay down outdated fires and mindsets, and embrace His new fire for this season.
5. Carry His new fire.
Let God ignite fresh passion within you to serve His purposes in your generation.
Conclusion
The land may be pleasant and full of resources, but without healed waters, it remains barren. God’s solution is not new methods but new men—new vessels filled with His salt. The call is clear: Bring a new cruse.
Will you be that vessel? Will you allow God to purge the old and fill you with His new fire? The nations await the manifestation of God’s sons and daughters.
